Response to Wallace "This is Water"

Personally speaking, I like Wallace’s commencement speech “This is Water” a lot because it teaches us many things. Wallace points out the fact that everyone is self-centered so that is the way we consider the belief, the facts, and the world. Therefore, it is difficult for a person to change other’s viewpoint because they have totally different experience, they form different belief that determine their attitude. I totally agree the author’s statement. In fact, we should not merely think about how to persuade others, how to let your audiences totally agree with your notion, or how to change others’ mind. Everyone is an independent individual that grow in different environment with different background and education. Therefore, exactly same idea is impossible. We should learn to accept different views and respect them. In addition, it is the different ideas that motivate the development of science and society.

I think the article is great and do not have any problem of it.

Response to Kaprow, Weschler,and Saunders

Kaprow, 'Blurring of art and life'

Even though in most of people’s view, the artworks are those stuffs that should only be put in library or museum, the author questioning this statement by providing the example of blushing tooth, an art because of the movement of elbow. According to the author, people always ignore the art in our daily lives. In fact, we could not only simply separate art from life because art occurs everywhere at any time. Everything in our lives can be considered as an art.

This kind of statement reminds me my life and begins to rethink which part of my life can be considered as an art. Then I come to realize the answer is everything. The photo of the people who are waiting for the bus is an art; the birds on the tree can be an art; the rotational movement of wheel of bus is an art… Art is just around us.

Weschler, 'The Desert'

In the text, Weschler described a man who sold a studio to a person and then left without thinking of any consequence to the Southwest desert. During the desert trip, he started to think about his life and his decision about selling the studio. He connected his art life to the experience on the desert. At the beginning, he found surroundings were really out of his expectations, and then he marked every event that he thought was meaningful. After several tryings, he finally figured out that the mark thing was meaningless and so does his life that try hard to get an identity to make others approve your ability. The important things is 'Whereas all that really mattered in such a situation was the place's presence'. Although ended with nothing, he really learned a lesson of his life.

Lovell, Saunders articles

Joel met Saunders in a Japanese restaurant. Saunders talked to Joel about his interesting story that a plane was occurred with a little accident when he was 10. This event really changed his point of view towards his life. Then Saunders wanted to be a person that makes everyone knows the importance that everything is like a treasure as he almost died during the accident. He even wrote several books, talked about his perspectives in the book; he is the really 'writer's writer'. I suppose that this writer made a good point that everyone deserves a unforgettable experience that makes him cherish his life. As those who always thinks about taking drugs or alcohol all day in the newspaper, we should take it seriously.

MP 3

Five things that are carried with me

My Keys: My keys are really important, as if i lost it, i may be locked out of my apartment and nowhere else to go. I hang a gorilla on it to make my key chain big enough for me to identify from my bag. Also, there are some membership cards with it. I like to go to grocery shop often for buying food stuffs to make my own meals so these cards can save me money though not a big money still a lot.

My calculator: As i am a business student, we are frequently encounter with little math problems in class for us to figure out. If i do not bring it someday, i will be panic as my manual calculation skill is weak. Besides, this calculator is really cool as it is totally pink like a toy, which is brought from one of my friend from UK.

My earphone: I choose this item because i love to listen to music. I have downloaded lots of music in my iphone, so when i am free by myself, i like to wear my earphone and enjoy the music. Also, sometimes if i feel frustrated, music can heal my sadness and distract my attention.

My BuckID: I bring my BuckID with me due to it is sort of a identification when on campus. I can use BuckID to borrow books from library, to take COTA bus, to have a meal on north commons and the most importantly, i can identify myself when taking a certain exam. So many benefits it brings to me, why not take it with me

My card case: My credit card, my debit card and my permit are all in my card case. I am the person that not bring cash with me, so i prefer not to take out big purse with me as not convenient. Also, this card case is bought from LA, and i really like it as it is stylish and convenient to take with me.

My phone: My phone is the most important thing on me. Since this is the information era, people cannot live without things like phone. I need to contact my friends, to take photos, to play games, to record important things and so on. It is like one of my part.

I love this background as i really like to watch  the SpongeBob SquarePants carton. Also, with my things on this background, they are fit with the cute SpongeBod. As a person who loves modern technology, I really enjoy the changes they bring to my life. For example, without iPhone , I cannot remember what i need to do everyday or when my examination will begin. Therefore, iPhone is a more convenient and lighter way for a lazy person such as me. These five projects show some of my identity at some degree. Even though some people believe it is better to share your concerns and some bad news with friends, I still like to keep them on my own because I do not want to bother others and let them worry about me. However, on the other hand, the things I carry every day are just some materials I need to take with me for better study. I never carry one thing because it reflects my identity.

Wexner Center

I had a lot of fun in exploring at Wexner Center. This is actually my second time going there. This time, i appreciated the video work of Christian Marclay and some pictures provided by FSA. Christian Marclay is a man who is obsessed about time. The exhibition is mainly a film that is about a 24-hour compilation of time-related scenes. What interested is, you will forget time when sitting there and watching. But you will be reminded about all the time in the film. Christian Marclay made this film by editing various film clip related with time. It took him two years to make such piece but it did not take longer to watch that. This film amazes me, as it is really a great perform essay on film and I think my world is like reconfigured. When I finished watching, it seemed everything is about the time. Time is for no one; it still continues no matter what happened to you.

Another exhibition is called 'More American Photographs'. The immense size of the photos that line the walls telling about the Great Depression, even although the pictures do not need any help in speaking for themselves. My favorite piece of the exhibit would have to be Hank Willis Thomas’Strawberry Mansion. It is a sort of folding card display of a long street made up of 72 compiled prints. In it the viewer sees boarded up houses contrasted with the broad smiles of those posing for the photo. The severity of the times is evident along with the simplicity and hopefulness of human nature to persist. Come see for yourself and witness that no matter the time, Americans have the ability to endure
